Types of Spine Decompression

People who are living with bulging or herniated discs, sciatica, or have worn spinal joints or nerve root damage may be able to enjoy relief with spinal decompression therapy. The procedure can be performed surgically or by non-invasive manipulation depending on the type of spinal condition and its severity.

Non-Surgical Decompression

Non-surgical spinal decompression treatment is a form of traction that is performed by a specially trained professional. Patients who are receiving the therapy are positioned face down on a motorized table, and the practitioner carefully adjusts the posture of the patient by electronically moving the table until it is in the optimal position.

The goal is to create negative pressure within the spinal canal that may allow bulging discs and other misplaced structures to move back into proper alignment. Once the unnatural compression of nerves is resolved, patients often experience less discomfort, and the vertebral column is better able to receive the healing effects of oxygen and nutrients from the increase in blood supply to the area.

Each session lasts between 30 and 45 minutes. A course of therapy usually consists of approximately 25 treatments over a six week period.

Surgical Decompression

Correcting abnormalities of the spine with surgical spine decompression is usually done after patients continue to experience discomfort in spite of having undergone therapies such as medication regimens, physical therapy and steroid injections. Several types of procedures are performed according to the type of problem that is being experienced.

During a laminectomy spine surgery, a portion of the bony arch of the vertebra or the entire arch itself is removed in order to free compressed nerves. Discectomies relieve pressure when a portion or an entire disc is extracted. Foraminotomies widen the nerve outlets and free nerves from constriction. During an osteophyte removal, bony fragments are detached allowing pinched nerves to be released.
